Silver rain was falling down …

December 4, 2008

Just spent a couple of days in London. The view from the conference was of Big Ben and the London Eye.

Some photos taken in the taxi on my way back to City airport on Thursday evening.

NaSoAlMo ::: National Solo Album Month

Make An Album This November

National Solo Album Month is a fun, free annual competition in which musicians write and record an entire album during the month of November – all by themselves. It was inspired by NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, in which writers attempt to write a novel during the same thirty days.

NaSoAlMo favors enthusiasm and perseverance rather than perfectionism. It’s meant to encourage musicians and would-be songwriters to silence their internal critic for thirty days in order to inspire and maximize productivity. The albums are likely to be hastily written, off-time, and out of tune; the main objective is to just do it.

I signed up to this on Monday night. I had had a bad evening and needed something to distract me.

I’ve decided to try and complete an album before the end of November.

The production values will be low, the songs won’t be polished, some of the singing will be out of tune, the instrumentation will be minimal.

But it will be done. The album will be called “One By One” because that’s how I’m approaching it : one song at a time.
Each song will be written and recorded as it will appear on the album. I’ll write about whatever comes into my head [this could be dangerous!]

My rules: album must be minimum 29 minutes long, it must be finished by the end of November, compose and record each song in a 2-hour session alone in my studio.

I’ll post the whole thing online on December 1st

This’ll be challenging because I’ve got a lot on between now and the end of the month.

In December I’m doing a trip to London and will be playing a radio session for NEAR FM on December 11th. Of course we’ve got the inevitable Christmas parties to attend – something I’m looking forward to – we need a bit of cheer.

Last night (Tuesday) I wrote & recorded the first song “One By One”.

Talking about regeneration

November 29, 2008

I”ve got 48 hours left to finish the album and tomorrow is committed to a journey to my brother’s house (to pick up 1000 CDs… but that’s another story)… and Sunday is Ben’s school Christmas Fair.

This has been a fascinating experience. I didn’t think I had this in me and I realise that I’ve been lazy about ‘finishing’ songs when I write them. I’ll polish them later… just write them and get them down into a demo

I’ll post a link to the ‘album’ when it’s done (on Monday December 1st)

Each song was written and recorded in 2 hours (well… a couple were 2.5 hours). If I was to use any of these for a proper album project I’d do a bit of re-writing but possibly not that much.

So far this is what I’ve got :

One By One.
This gave me the album title. It’s about facing your inner demons one-by one. (I can only say that now that I’ve looked at the lyrics haha ).
Just me and my Epiphone dot. Simple guitar and vocal. Listening to it in the car I think I could do something further with this on my real album. I’d work it up into a full band arrangement though.

Empty Nest.
This is a sappy rip off of what might be a Howard Jones song but not a million miles from a Genesis b-side.
I will make no apologies for sappy songs. There’s room for everything.
I tried to imagine the parent saying goodbye to their child when they left home. I think there’s a bit of regret around how I left home – I couldn’t wait to get out and probably should have been a bit better to mum about it all.

Fly In The Ointment.
Cod White Reggae. I never never never thought I’d do this. But I have to admit I ENJOYED it and that’s the point. (isn’t it?)
Now that it’s written I realise it’s my statement on the media and how the sky is falling on a weekly basis.
Of course when the sky does fall I’m going to look pretty fucking stupid…

Art Sake.
After attending the Arts Council conference this week I wondered if anything would come out of it.
This is what came out of it. I think it’s like a Royksopp type thing but probably not as slick.
“…between you and me I would rather be free…”

Don’t Push Your Luck.
On the home stretch now. This is a throwback to early 1980s synth pop Heaven 17 meets Human League (yes I know) meets Fad Gadget.
Somebody needs to kill these celberities and put us out of our misery.

I’m going to try and do another song on Sunday and who knows what will come from that ? I’m going to use my acoustic guitar and a harmonica. Bobby Dylan ? You bet your ass

Art for arts sake…

newmedia

I’ve been invited to participate in a panel discussion at the Arts Council ‘New Media New Audience’

It’s a one day working seminar on the arts, new media and broadcasting.

Being held in Dublin Castle on 25th November 2008.

More details here : http://artscouncilnewmediaconference.com

New Technologies, Old Traditions

As we come to grips with social media, blogging, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr etc a new raft of technologies is being developed that will overtake these familiar platforms. What can the arts learn from the gaming and advertising industries (the primary developers of interactive technologies) and how do we want (if at all) to use these technologies in the next 10 to 20 years? More importantly how are these technologies impacting on the way in which artists are making work?

Moderator: Haydn Shaughnessy (Journalist, Gallery Owner)

Panellists: Fearghus O’Conchuir (Choreographer), Trevor Curran (Campbell Ryan Productions), Conor McGarrigle (Artist), Peter Fitzpatrick (Microsoft Ireland).

You know my name (look up the number)

October 20, 2008

I gave in and created a Facebook account. Mostly so that I could view someone’s profile because they’d been to a songwriting workshop I had attended. The only way to view what they have written is to become a “friend” on Facebook.

So I started entering random names from my memory. Lo and behold I found a couple of old friends that I had lost touch with.

The problem with their search engine is that you cannot specify anything more than their name and school or workplace. That doesn’t really help me track down people I haven’t seen in 20 years now does it ?

This evening I’m back in the studio and getting the acoustic guitar track for ‘Be Alright’ recorded. It’ll possibly be the opening track on the album. This 4-headed monster (writer, performer, producer, engineer) is very difficult. I have more respect now for anyone who records a solo album (truly solo… no assistants at all).

Green Bayou

September 22, 2008

I played my first show in the US this week. Despite the jet lag I managed to do a half-hour set of my own songs in front of a very appreciative audience (hello Rita).

What a long strange trip it’s been. From Bore Place (here, here and here) to the Celtic Bayou in Seattle.

Curse Sir Walter Raleigh He Was Such A Stupid Git

I enjoy visiting places… have just spent a week in Seattle.

I dislike the travel bit though. Airplanes, airports, don’t agree with me.

Now it’s Monday morning, 5:45am and I’ve been up since 3:30am

Wide Awake. It’s not America.

This is going to be a long day.

the photo above is me being grumpy in the SAS lounge in Copenhagen airport yesterday.

Hence the blank post below.

One Two Three Four

September 8, 2008

And so it begins. I finally made a start on my “album” yesterday. Now at this point it might not be a full-length album because that might take too long. It’s looking more like an EP right now, at least 4 and maybe 6 songs. A mini-LP if you like.

At my recent gig I got some useful feedback from a good friend who knows a little about songwriting and production. Basically my lyrics tend to be verbose. Much like this blog. That’s how I communicate verbally and in email too. So as I go along I’ll be trying to remove a little of the flab. Here’s a video clip from my most recent gig. This was quite a night: 30 minutes of my own material in front of a paying audience. It’s been a long time coming and at the end of it all I felt like I had just done something really important for me.

I’m keeping a video camera running in my studio to grab bits of the recording process. This might get used in some sort of promo video. It won’t be a diary-room-confessional.

Recording is a tricky thing. So that I can edit the songs later I need to make sure I’m in time so I use a ‘click track’ which is basically a metronome or a drum loop. Finding the right tempo is a bugger and takes longer than you’d imagine. Once I’ve got the tempo I put down a guide track so that I know whereabouts I am in the song. For the first song “What Do I Know” (my most recent composition) I used the guitar and a guide vocal.

It’s a Jekyll & Hyde situation when you’re alone in the studio: one moment I’m an engineer setting up the microphone and getting a sound, the next I’m a musician trying to play accurately but with some feeling and trying to leave space for the subsequent instruments, then I’m a producer keeping a view of the entire song and how I want it to sound. At what point do I say ‘that’s as good as I can play it so move on’ ? At what point do I stop worrying about it sounding crap and have a bit of confidence in myself ? You’d imagine that the guitar would have taken maybe an hour, maybe it does for other artists. 3 hours later I had my guitar track and I am happy with it. Before moving on I played a basic string quartet sound on top of the guitar and guide vocal to see if I had left enough room in the guitar playing for other instruments.  Next up will be a string arrangement. One of the common mistakes made is to get a keyboard sound with loads of sampled string instruments and play the whole lot together – almost like an organ part. While the sound is string-like it’s obvious that it’s just a keyboard player blocking out chords. The trick is to play each individual instrument and layer up the arrangement. I might have to score it out (I knew that degree would come in useful some day). It’ll be cello, 2 violas and 2 violins.

I was hoping to get the guitar part completed for my second song “Devil & The Deep Blue Sea” but only got as far as mapping out the song into the computer. I’ll make more progress tonight. The challenge with this song is the fact that I just realised there’s a time-signature change from 4/4 to 2/4 in each verse ! (or maybe I need to think of the time signature in a different way). I’m doing these two songs first because they’ll have similar arrangements: acoustic guitar, lead vocal, string quartet and backing vocals.

Got Live If you want it

August 14, 2008

Just got back from playing my first proper ‘set’ at a gig here in Dublin.  Up to now I’ve been playing 2-3 songs at open mics. Getting good feedback on the songs but have been hankering to stretch myself a little and play a longer set.

I did a 30 minute set at a bar in south Dublin along with 3 other singer-songwriters. I opened, which was a bit nervy, with 6 people in the audience. 3 of them were musicians. From small acorns.

Mid-way through one of my songs the electricity cut-out but the show went on and I continued sans-PA.

The crowd built a little and there were 12-plus people there by the time I finished – I suspect they came from the downstairs bar when the football finished.

I’ve walked away with a bit of confidence and was asked to come back in 2 weeks (I’m in Germany next week so had to decline next week).

Wow. I think I’m now a proper singer-songwriter.

In September I’m going to be in Seattle for work and am trying to line up 2 maybe 3 open mics while I’m there.

it’s all good.  [but I need to start opening my eyes a bit while singing… I’ll bet it drives people nuts]
